The Importance of the Name Marianne

The symbol of a woman named Marianne became the embodiment of the French Republic and the values of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity that were so important when it was formed in 1792. Marianne can be found on official seals and stamps in France, and busts of her can be found at city halls and other important buildings throughout France. She continues to be a symbol for the country to this day.

Sanité Bélair

Sanité Bélair (Suzanne Bélair) was a Haitian freedom fighter during the Haitian Revolution. Bélair was a sergeant and then a lieutenant and her and her husband were largely responsible for the slave revolt of L’Artibonite.
